Anton & Mark
There are wineries with history, and then there are wineries that have helped shape the history of an entire wine region. Artemis Wines in Mittagong is very much the latter.
Brothers Anton and Mark Balog began making wine in the Southern Highlands in 1996, becoming the first winemakers to plant Pinot Noir in the region. Today, they're affectionately known as the Southern Highlands' Pinot Noir pioneers, continuing a family winemaking tradition that spans seven generations.

Their approach brings together the best of two worlds: European winemaking traditions and the distinctive character of Australian cool-climate fruit. With vineyards sitting between 600 and 700 metres above sea level, Artemis produces wines that reflect both the region's growing conditions and the team's commitment to their craft.
Alongside the Balog brothers is winemaker Tom Evans, who brings another layer to the Artemis story. A high-school friend of Mark's, Tom has become an integral part of the winemaking team, helping bring the Artemis philosophy to life in the winery. His work also extends to other Southern Highlands producers, including Cherry Tree Hill Wines, where he collaborates with owner Dave Lorentz and the Balog brothers.

Together, they champion a hands-on approach to winemaking, combining traditional techniques such as hand picking, whole-bunch fermentation and small-batch production with modern winemaking expertise.

For visitors following Tasting Trails, Artemis offers more than a cellar door experience. It's an opportunity to discover the people, friendships and family traditions behind some of the Southern Highlands' most recognisable wines.
